If you want a quick way of dimming your screen then DimScreen gets the job done rather easily, this portable app works in the system tray allowing you to choose a dim percentage. You can also use hotkeys for the same effect tough i found the default ones unworkable so i changed them in the settings menu. DimScreen does what it says so try it if you are interested. Available for all Windows versions.
